History

In 1992, Steve Barns opened a private counseling practice in Denton under the name Steve Barns & Associates with the desire to offer biblically based counseling to the surrounding community. Given the numerous and varied individual, marriage, and family problems he observed on a daily basis, Steve felt burdened to offer biblical solutions and direction. In addition, he wanted to help other Christian counselors learn to apply the Word of God to every detail of human life. He began supervising men and women who were pursuing formal education in biblical counseling as a way of life, whether they wished to become licensed or serve as lay counselors in their churches.

In 2000, Steve became a full-time pastoral staff member of Denton Bible Church (DBC). His charge was to broaden and deepen counseling ministry to the church and community. The counseling ministry of DBC was officially underway. In the same year, John Henderson began to serve on a part-time basis, before moving into a full-time pastoral counseling position in 2002. Over the years, a number of men and women have faithfully served and continue to serve as counselors in this ministry.

During the past several years there has been a growing emphasis on biblical counseling training at DBC. We have become increasingly convinced that such training falls under the responsibility of pastors and leaders in the body of Christ, “for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ.” (Ephesians 4:12)

Equipped to Counsel, our biblical counseling training program, was officially launched in the fall of 2004 with four eager students. By God’s grace it has grown over the years. Now we pray and strive to equip 25-30 men and women a year in face-to-face gospel ministry before putting them into service within the body of Christ.

Today, by God’s grace, Steve Barns & Associates offers a number of biblical counseling options, including a staff of licensed professional counselors who strive to counsel according to the Word of God, and a team of lay counselors, trained in biblical counseling and eager to see the gospel of Jesus Christ transform the hearts and lives of those they serve.
